UNCLE “JOHN” GLASSBRENNER PASSES AWAY.
Surrounded by Twelve of His Thirteen Children, After a Long Illness.
George L. Glassbrenner, Sr., died Friday afternoon about 3 o’clock atthe home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles Wade, in West Ninth street,where he was taken several months ago from his own home in the NorthSide.
He was 81 years old last March, and was subject to attacks of illnesscaused by a complication of aliments for several years past. He was afamous cake baker years ago in St. Louis and later in Jersey County.Very few weddings took place in western Jersey County for years thathe did not bake the wedding cake. He farmed for several years inJersey County coming to Alton 8 or 10 years ago because most of hischildren lived here. He was a kindly, honest man, and the name “UncleJohn” which children gave him, 35 or 40 years ago clung to him untilhis death.
He is survived by his wife and thirteen children all of whom were athis bedside when the end came, except Mrs. Jesse Starr, who lives inTexas. She spent several months with her parents last spring andsummer. The fatal illness begun six months or more ago and when heshowed no signs of improvement he was removed to his daughter’s home.
The children are Peter Glassbrenner, Mrs. Charles Wade, Mrs. PeterBoedy, Geo. L. Glassbrenner, Jr., William Glassbrenner, Mrs. JosephKohler, Mrs. John Grenzebach, Dr. Anton, Henry and John Glassbrenner,Mrs. Brunce Rintoul, Mrs. John Toupno, and Mrs. Starr.
Funeral arrangements have not been made.

Funeral of G. L. Glassbrenner, Sr.
The funeral of “Uncle John” Glassbrenner was held yesterday afternoonfrom the home of his daughter, Mrs. Charles Wade, on West Ninthstreet, and was attended by a very large number of people from allparts of Alton, from St. Louis and western Jersey county. Serviceswere conducted by Rev. E. L. Mueller, pastor of the German EvangelicalChurch, and burial was in Oakwood cemetery. Floral offerings werenumerous and beautiful.
The pall bearers were grandsons, Leonard, Fred, Ray, Emmett andHerschell Glassbrenner and Former Street Commissioner Emil Wade.
