G. L. Glassbrenner
Dies At Age of 72
After Long Illness
Had Grieved For His Son Killed in Action in France
George L. Glassbrenner, almost a lifelong resident of Alton, and oneof the best known residents of the North Side, died this morning at5:25 o’clock at his home, 238 Delmar avenue, after a long illness. Mr.Glassbrenner went to St. Louis six weeks ago to undergo a surgicaloperation for what proved to be a fatal malady. He remained in thehospital three weeks, returning home three weeks ago. The operationdid result in the relief of his suffering, but it was recognized earlythat there was no chance of his recovery.
Mr. Glassbrenner was a native of Jersey county, where he was born June2, 1862, and had passed his seventy-second birthday. He was married toAnnie Stanton, Sept. 11, 1890, and beside her he leaves one son,Leonard Glassbrenner, who lives In Jerseyvllle. Another son, Fred, waskilled in France in September, 1918, while serving in the A. E. F.during the closing days of the war. He leaves beside his wife and oneson, a large family of brothers and sisters, Mrs. Joseph Koehler, Mrs.John Toupno, Mrs. Charles Wade, Mrs. Bruce Rintoul, Mrs. BarbaraBoedy, Mrs. John Grenzebach, all of Alton, Mrs. Sadie Starr ofChicago, and four brothers, Peter of Jerseyville, William and Anton ofAlton, and John of St. Louis.
Mr. Glassbrenner was one of the widest known residents of the NorthSide. For years he took an active part in local politics, and had beena member of the county Republican organization. It made a great changein the life of “Paddy” Glassbrenner when his son was killed in actionin France. He was never the same man from that time. He sought relieffrom his sorrow by getting away from the old scenes that had beenassociated with his dead son and he went to Florida, but he could notstay there. The old home’s lure called him back and he returned tothis vicinity to spend the remainder of his life. Six weeks ago, aftera thorough diagnosis had been made of his malady, Mr. Glassbrennerentered a hospital in St. Louis to undergo surgery, in the hope ofgetting some relief. It was not unknown to him that there was hardly apossibility he would be greatly benefitted. He went about telling hisfriends goodbye and then courageously went on the operating table.
The passing of “Paddy” Glassbrenner will be sincerely regretted bymany in Madison and Jersey counties who had known him well and likedhim.
He was a member of Plasa lodge, No. 27, A. F. & A. M.
The funeral will be held Friday at 2 p. m. and services will be at thehome, 238 Delmar avenue. Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery.
