Alton’s Oldest
Barber Dies of
A Heart Attack
William T. Glassbrenner, 79, Succumbs at Home on Edwards Street
In Trade for 59 Years
Was Charter Member of Union-Had Worked Saturday
Death came to Alton’s oldest active barber, William Touchant (Spunk)Glassbrenner, 79, at 4:20 Monday afternoon within a few minutes afterhe was stricken with an apparent heart attack after firing the heatingplant at his home, 3146 Edwards street.
Monday was Glassbrenner’s day off from work, and the fatal attack camewith no warning. In fact, he had remarked the day previous to membersof his family on feeling “unusually well.” He had been seated talkingwith his wife. Then as Mrs. Glassbrenner answered the telephone, hewent to the basement. From her place at the telephone, Mrs.Glassbrenner heard her husband fall after he came upstairs to thekitchen. She ran to his aid, then called a physician, but deathalready had ensued.
Just a week before his death, Glassbrenner had rounded out hisfifty-ninth year as a barber. He had been employed of late at theLinkogle shop, 117 West Fourth street, and had worked as usual therelast Saturday.
Helped Form Union
Advancing years had touched him but lightly, and his patrons who knewhe had rounded out more than a half century at the trade marveled atthe steadiness of his hand and the perfected skill he retained withrazor and scissors. It was only close acquaintances who realized hewas nearing four score years in age and three score as a barber.
Members of his family said that he had scarcely known an illness inhis lifetime save an occasional cold.
Of an original group of ten who formed the Alton local of the Barbers’Union 50 years ago last January, Glassbrenner was one of two survivingfrom the charter list, and the only original member who had continuedsteadily at the trade. His long membership was informally marked bythe local when the fiftieth anniversary date was passed last winter.Glassbrenner had started at the trade when a scant 21 years old, taking a chair at the Lem Giles shop in what was North Alton.
Born in Newbern, Nov. 19, 1863, the son of John and Mary Glassbrenner,he had been a resident of Alton community since his parents moved herewhen he was 16. Until a few years after marriage, he was a resident ofNorth Alton, then moved to a home on West Ninth street, then known asMain street. Sixteen years ago he moved to the Upper Alton address.
Married In 1888
On June 6, 1888. Glassbrenner was united in marriage in St. Paul’sEpiscopal Church to Mary Catherine Haberer who survives him, as doalso a daughter and three sons. The daughter is Mrs. Ruth Kenney ofCharleston, W. Va., and the sons are W. L. and Herschell Glassbrennerof Alton and Technical Sergt. Paul Glassbrenner, who is with an ArmyMedical Corps detachment a Bowling Green, Va. A fourth son Charles, died several years ago as the result of injury in an industrialaccident.
Glassbrenner also leaves six sisters: Mrs. Nettie Toupno. Mrs MaryGrenzebach, Mrs. Bruce Rintoul, Mrs. Ellen Wade, Mrs. Sadie Starr, andMrs. Barbara Boedy and a brother, John Glassbrenner of St. Louis.
Funeral arrangements have not been completed pending the arrival hereof the two absent children Mrs. Kenney and Sergeant Paul Glassbrenner, from Virginia.  The body is at Morrow-Quinn funeral home.
