PIONEER OF ALTON DRUG TRADE DIES --------- Horatio W. Chamberlain, 83 Years Old, Taken by Heart Trouble --------- Was Widely Known --------- Funeral Services Are to Be Held Thursday Afternoon. ---------
Horatio W. Chamberlain, retired druggist, for years a leadingbusinessman of Alton, died Tuesday evening at 7:30 o’clock at the homeof his son, Leslie Chamberlain, 2114 Central Avenue.
The end came suddenly. He had just eaten his evening meal and wasbeing assisted upstairs by his son when he collapsed, and death wasimmediate He had been suffering from a serious form of heart troublefor five years. In the last three weeks his change for the worse hadbeen rapid, but he continued to be up and around the house.
Was Progressive
Mr. Chamberlain came to Alton when a young man and entered the drugbusiness, first in a drug store as a pharmacist, afterward asproprietor.
He conducted his drug store for many years on the south side of ThirdStreet at the foot of Belle. That drug store for many years was theshow place of Alton in those days when life was less complex andthings were simpler. It had the most wonderful soda fountain, for itsday, Mr. Chamberlain was the man who brought refined soda water toAlton. He installed a great de luxe marble fountain in his place whichwas an attraction in itself-simple as compared to the fountains oftoday, but a wonder in its time. People went miles to see it. Heconcocted something called “whipped cream” and served it in his sodawater. It was one of the favorite rewards parents used to give theirchildren back 40 to 45 years ago, that the children would be taken fora drink of soda water at the Chamberlain drug store, if they weregood.
The drug store was also a sort of club where men gathered and theyplanned local enterprises and enjoyed social times. Today there is noplace in Alton that corresponds to what it was, modern businessmethods having made such a place impossible.
Mr. Chamberlain was an ardent sportsman. When it came to fishing, hehad the best fishing tackle there was, and as for firearms, no onecould compare with him. He was a crack shot as well as a goodfisherman. Then there was the aquatic side of his tastes. Mr.Chamberlain loved to be on the water. He owned sailboats and canoes, and when he could make it possible he was certain to be found sailinghis little boats on the river with a skill that marked him as a mastersailorman.
Retired in 1912
In the year 1912, Mr. Chamberlain gave up his drug store in Alton andexcept for the short periods when he would be ‘helping out’ some one,he as not again in the drug business. Mr. Chamberlain was 83 years ofage last Dec. 16. He is survived by three children, Leslie and HaroldChamberlain, and Mrs. Lucille Smith, all of Alton. Mrs. Chamberlaindied a year ago last October. The funeral will be from the home ofLeslie Chamberlain tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock and services willbe conducted by the Rev. J.M. Warner of the First Bapist church.Burial will be in City cemetery.
