Died in Alton, Madison, Illinois, USA.3,4 From: Alton Evening Telegraph, Monday, May 6, 1940; Page 2, Column 3: Woman Dies of Gas Fumes on 23d Birthday __________________________________________________ Found Unconscious in Home, Dies Later in a Hospital __________________________________________________ Inhalator Unavailing ____________________ Mother of 2-Year-Old Son Discovered as Husband Returns Home ____________________________________________________________ Death at 6:30 Sunday evening, an hour and a half after she had beenfound unconscious from gas fumes in the family apartment at 1410a EastFourth street, brought to a tragic close the twenty-third birthday ofMrs. Eunice Kenney, wife of Donald W. Kenney. Mrs. Kenney was found at 5 pm. when her husband returned home withtheir two-year-old son, Terry, after being absent since 10 am. Finding the door locked, he told police, he noted an odor of gas, andhastily broke in. On discovering what had occurred, he shut off thegas stove, hastily broke out a window with a chair to admit more freshair, and gave an alarm which resulted in an ambulance, doctor, and thefire department inhalator squad being called. Firemen who responded with the inhalator from the No. 1 departmenthouse said that they found Mrs. Kenney had been moved to the backporch, and there they worked for more than 30 minutes an effort torevive her. Meantime a physician arrived, and Mrs. Kenney was taken toSt. Joseph’s Hospital in an ambulance, the fire department squad,directed by Foreman Arnold Selbson, keeping up the inhalatortreatment during the trip. Resuscitation efforts were continued at the hospital under directionthe physician, but without avail, and at 6:30 Mrs. Kenney waspronounced dead, and the office of Deputy Coroner Klunk notified. Kenney said that he and his wife were to have gone to a family dinnerat the home of his mother, Mrs. Thomas Kenney, at 1231 East Seventhstreet, at noon Sunday. the day being his wife’s twenty-thirdbirthday. They had disagreed about some plans they were consideringfor moving, and he had taken the baby and gone to his mother’s home.He had not regarded the disagreement as more than a trivial matter andhad expected his wife later would join him and the baby for the dinnerengagement. Beside her husband and son, Mrs. Kenney is survived by her mother,Mrs. Bertha Koehne; two sisters, Mrs. Russell Coultas of St. Louis andMrs. Kenneth Plenkhaus of Bethalto. Mrs. Kenney was born in Cleveland,May 5, 1917, but during her early life was a resident of Wood River.She and Kenney were married a little more than three years ago andsince had resided in Alton. Funeral rites for Mrs. Kenney have been set for Tuesday at 9 a. m., atSt. Patrick’s Church and interment will be in Greenwood cemetery. Kenney, wereheld at 9 a. m., today at St. Patrick’s Church with the Rev. FatherJohn Crosson as celebrant of the requiem mass. Burial was in Greenwoodcemetery. Services at the church and at the cemetery were largelyattended. Pallbearers were Kdward Gillespie, Maurice Henkhaus, Clarence Kolp,William Heintz, Paul Kennedy and John McConnell.
