After an extended period of failing health due to a heart ailment,Samuel R. Tingley, 73, almost half a century a resident of the NorthAlton community, died at 3:30 a. m. today in St. Anthony’s Infirmary.The decline in his health had set in about two years ago. He had beenunder treatment in the infirmary for the last four weeks.

Tingley was a native of Cincinnati, O. born May 29, 1864. He came toAlton a little more than 50 years ago. His first employment here wason a farm north of Upper Alton on what now is the Humbert street road.

Owner of the farm was A. T. Benson, also a former Cincinnati man. TheTelegraph’s Fifty Years Ago column recently mentioned a hunting tripwhich Benson and Tingley had taken to points in Missouri.

Later Tingley quit farming and took employment at the Illinois GlassCo.

A few years after locating here, Tingley married Miss Barbara Redmondof Alton and the established their home in North Alton.

After the death of his wife in 1932, Tingley closed his home andresided in turn with his children. He had recently been making hishome with his daughter, Mrs. Leslie Chamberlain. Besides his daughter,survivors include two sons, S. Raymond Tingley of Alton and QuentinTingley of Michigan; three grandchildren; and two brothers and twosisters in Cincinnati. Tingley was a member of the Modern Woodmanorder. He was widely acquainted in the North Side area, and a man whoheld the high esteem and respect of the friends he had made in hislong residence there.

Funeral services are to be conducted Sunday at 2:30 p.m. in the Gentfuneral home by Rev. R. H. Atchison, rector of St. Paul’s Church.Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery beside the grave of his wife.Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 this evening.
