  • (This was written by Ethelwin A. Jones Chamberlain in 1954 for herson, Frank D. Chamberlain, II)  Henry Family, Blanford ,Massachusetts.  Samuel Henry my Great Grandfather and Louise Russellmy Great Grandmother Henry.  Her sister married William Russell, whombrought Old Lame Great Great Grandma Russell to live with them.  LameGrandma was 99 years 9 months 9 days old when she died.  Her father'sname was Yale, and he founded Yake (Yale) College.
    Samuel Henry was my Great Grandfather.  Joseph Henry and Milton Henrywas Samuel's boys and Lucy Henry Spelman was Samuel's girl and MellRussell.  Samuel came from Blanford, Massachusetts in covered wagons.There were four families.  There were 4 covered wagons and 19 wagons,cows, horses, and a few belongings.  They came to Cleveland, Ohio onLake Erie, at that time there were 3 log cabins on the shore of LakeErie.  The one family, Style, liked it there and stayed there.  Theother three families came on to Westfield, Creston Chase came toWestfield LeRoy, built the home where Fremans lived for a number ofyears.  Samuel came to LeRoy on the Snyder farm, went to Creston andbuilt the house Ruth Simmons-now Mrs. Henry Stebbins owns, he lattermoved to Wooster to live, he was a Doctor in Wooster for a great manyyears.  When our family came to LeRoy, the people of Massachusettsgave a big party for all of them coming West.  The day they started,everyone was out to see them off, wishing them luck.
    When they got to Lake Erie they thought it was too damp there so theycame on to Westfield, 35 miles south of Cleveland.
    Grandpa Joseph Henry married Amanda Russell, they had 4 children,Josie, Lettie, Sam and Lucy.  Josie was a very dear person , she nevermarried, stayed at home and took care of her people.  Lettie marriedIrvin Ward, a fine good man, they had one child, Julia Ward whom nevermarried.  Sam had three boys, Charlie, Carl, Melton.
    Lucy married Wilson I. Jones, they had one child, Ethelwin.  Wilsondied when Ethelwin was eight.  Lucy died when Ethelwin was 15.  Samdied the year before Lucy died.  Lettie is 97 years and alive now.
    Lucy Henry Spelman had one child, Laura, she married John D.Rockefeller.  Aunt Lucy Spelman raised her sister's child, whom wasnamed after Aunt Lucy.  Her mother was Mell Russell.  She nevermarried, she lived with the Rockefellers.
    After Lucy Henry Jones died Aunt Lucy Russell Spelman gave money tobuy Ethelwin's clothes, schooling and spending money until she marriedFred.  Every summer Ethelwin went for a visit to the Rockefeller homein Cleveland to be with Aunt Lucy.
    Milton Henry had 8 children, all lived in Akron.  All dead now.  Whenthe Henry family came here,  one learned dress making and millinery,one a tailoress, one a shoemaker, which was Joseph, one, Milton,mercantile business, one a farmer, and two teachers.
