Melvin Simpson

BUNKER HILL - Melvin C. "Popeye" Simpson, 68, died Thursday, Oct. 22,1998, at Scott Air Force Base Medical Center.

A son of John Franklin and Helen Irene (Everett) Simpson, he was bornJuly 9, 1930, in Alton.

He served with the U.S. Army from 1947 to 1967 and was later employedas a police officer with the Defense Department at Granite City.

After retiring, he worked with horses at D&D Track in Brighton.

He married the former Betty Ann Gavender on Sept. 6, 1963, in Atlanta,Ga. She survives.

In addition to his wife, surviving are two daughters, Tammy Fagensonand her husband, Ed of Midlothian, Va., and Christy Simpson of BunkerHill; four sons, Marshall Simpson and his wife, Marietta of Raleigh,N.C., Melvin C. Simpson Jr. of Tampa, Fla., Richard Simpson and hiswife, Chris of Fenton, Mo.  and Steve Simpson and his wife, Kim ofNixa, Mo.; 13 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters,Pearl Graham of Alton and Thelma King of Bethalto; and two brothers,Marvin Simpson of  Fulton, Ill. and John Simpson of Meadowbrook.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Monday at Jacoby-Wise Funeral Homein Bunker Hill, where services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday bythe Rev. Kenneth Jaworski.

Burial will be at Camp Butler National Cemetery in Springfield, Ill.

Memorials may be given to Adopt-A-Pet or New Hope Community Center inCottage Hills.
